銀河鉄道の夜


教養レベルの主教材として『英語で読む 銀河鉄道の夜』(宮沢賢治作,ロジャー・パルバース訳,ちくま文庫)を使っています。翻訳者のロジャー・パルバース氏は,2013年に"Strong in the Rain" Bloodaxe Books(2007)で 野間文芸翻訳賞を受賞し,井上ひさし原作の『父と暮らせば』などの翻訳も手がけています。「宮沢賢治だったら,あー,きっとこういう表現をするんだろう」と,半ばトランス状態になって翻訳に取り組んだそうです。

英語で書かれたこの作品を一語一句精読することで,淡く美しい賢治独特の文体をより身近に感じることができてうれしく思いました。「外国語を知らない者は,自国語についても無知である」というゲーテの言葉を再認識させられました。

現在,書店に並んでいる『英語で読む 銀河鉄道の夜』は,パルバース氏とっての翻訳第4稿を出版したものですが,最新版の第5稿が2011年,電子書籍『Night On The Milky Way Train』Roger & Lucy Pulvers (2011)として発表されています。出版業界の事情はわかりませんが最新版の発行が待たれるところです。常にbetterを希求するパルバース氏の姿勢に,賢治に対する強烈な思いが伝わってきます。

「おや,変なものがあるよ。」カムパネルラが,不思議そうに立ちどまって,岩から黒い細長いさきの尖ったくるみのようなものをひろいました。

赤字部分の「流れてきたんじゃない。」は読み方によっては,「推量」とも「否定」ともとれる表現ですが,翻訳では probably や too からみてとれるように,明らかに「推量」と解しています。一方,オーディオブックCD『宮沢賢治「銀河鉄道の夜 Nokto de la Galaksia Fervojo」』(パンローリング)のカムパネルラ役の声優の方はきっぱりと「否定」と解した言い方をしています。
